About the Art: This artwork shows the beauty of the exterior of the Great Dismal Swamp,once a vast million-acre wetland stretching from Virginia to the Carolinas. Interiorly there is a remarkable story of refuge and resistance it harbored within.
The dwellers to elevate their wooden homes above the treacherous terrain. These Indigenous peoples, impoverished whites, and formerly enslaved individuals sought freedom in this harsh environment despite venomous snakes, predators, and disease.
Moses Grandy who was hired out to cut timber in the swamp while enslaved gave a first hand account of the perilous conditions reinforcing the desperation the inhabitants felt in the outside world. could drive people to seek sanctuary in such a dangerous place. The work serves as a powerful meditation on the human drive for autonomy and the lengths to which people will go to escape oppression.
Today, only a fraction of the original swamp remains preserved as a national park, making this artistic commemoration of its historical significance all the more vital to our understanding of American history and the ongoing struggle for freedom.
