About the Art: Elmina Castle in Ghana, built in 1482 by the Portuguese as a trading post, became a central port in the transatlantic slave trade where former storerooms were converted into dungeons for enslaved Africans. The castle’s dungeons were overcrowded, dark, and airless spaces where slave traders would cram over one thousand people into areas meant for two hundred, with almost no light or sanitation.

The infamous Door of No Return represented the final exit for thousands of enslaved people crossed before boarding ships that would take them to various locations in America and Europe. It is a powerful symbol of this tragic chapter in world history.
