About the Art: Africa is a woman was previously named mother Africa. I participated in an art show called a gathering of sisters and a poet and artist Denise Brown recited her original poem Africa’s woman. I spoke with Miss Brown after her performance and told her how moved I was by the performance and that she did the perfect interpretation of two of my works of art.

This powerful artwork was inspired by the artist’s first visit to the APEX (African American Panoramic Experience) Museum on Atlanta’s historic Auburn Avenue. Following an encounter with museum founder Dr. Dan Moore Sr. and engagement with his writings, the artist created this evocative portrait of a I then renamed it Africa is a Woman after Being inspired by Miss Brown’s moving poem.

The piece symbolizes the profound cultural, intellectual, and material contributions of African peoples to the United States. The artist has skillfully incorporated hidden imagery throughout the composition, inviting viewers to discover layers of meaning that speak to Africa’s abundant natural resources and the enduring legacy of its diaspora.

“Africa is a Woman” stands as a visual meditation on heritage, strength, and the interconnectedness of African and American histories, as preserved and celebrated by institutions like the APEX Museum, the first of its kind in Atlanta dedicated to telling history from an African American perspective.
