About the Art: “Cultivation of America,” named by dear friend and griot CathyLoving, depicts a strong African woman who brought seeds from her homeland to America, hidden in her hair. The artwork symbolizes how enslaved African women transported agricultural knowledge across the Atlantic, bringing their strength, innovation, and ingenuity to cultivate crops that would fundamentally transform the American landscape and food systems. This piece honors the often unacknowledged African women whose agricultural expertise and resilience helped shape American culture and prosperity.
